Below is my lineage, starting with Yang Luchan, founder of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan

Other Pictures

The picture below shows several prominent Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan Teachers and teachers of other martial arts.  Included is Dong Ying Jie (a.k.a. Tung Ji Yieh). Dong Yin Jie was one of Fong Ha’s teachers.  The picture is probably from the late 1920’s (Yang Shao Hao died in 1930, so it is before that).

  1. My heart just hurts to find out that Master Fong Ha passed away! I did not know. I have studied with him several times. He always remembered me when he came to Joliet, IL. Such a kind and gentle man! I’m sorry for his loss. This man had a gentle soul and he gleamed with happiness when he taught! I found a book at Barnes n Noble on 12 masters. I came across him and what he said just hit me! Took 10 yrs to get it. I thought he’s in CA and I wouldn’t meet him. Two months later there was a flyer on my Senseis desk saying Master Fong was coming in for the weekend! I was so so excited! I finally met him and could only spend one day. I couldn’t afford the next day. He told me to come. I said I couldn’t afford it. He said it doesn’t matter he wanted me there! I went! I will never forget him. He signed my book and told me that it didn’t matter it took me 10 yrs to realize something, becuz I did get it and that’s what was important! Will always love and miss you Master Fong Ha!

    1. Yes, that was Fong! He cared about his students very much. He was also exceedingly humble. He tried to express things as simply as possible, but Tai Chi is such an amazing art, that it often must be experienced to be understood. Every time he would explain something, I would think, “That makes sense, I get it now.” And the next time he explained the same thing, my understanding had evolved and I got something else deeper out of it.

He is missed by his family, friends and students.

  2. Hello I am looking for a beginners course . Need to improve my balance . I realize that you may not be open right now. Would like to come and see you facility when you are open .. could you give me some idea of cost and length of lessons . Thank you Gail

    1. Hi Gail,

Thank you for contacting me about beginner Tai Chi Classes. As you surmised, I am currently not teaching any classes due to Covid-19. However, I am currently exploring the possibility of on-line classes.

My classes are taught through Normandale Community College Continuing Education, and Wayzata Public Schools Community Education. At both institutions, I teach the same form, which is Cheng Man Ching’s 37-move, Yang Style Short Form. This is an easy to learn form that Cheng Man Ching derived from the traditional long form (which has 108 moves) by removing most of the repetition of moves. Yang style Tai Chi is the most popular style of the five major styles, and is good for improving balance.

I teach the beginner’s course, called ABCs of Tai Chi, on Monday nights at Normandale and Wednesday nights at Central Middle School in Plymouth. Both are a 6-week course designed to let people decide whether Tai Chi is for them without a large financial commitment; the cost is $65 for the course.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Sincerely,

      Jay Soderberg
